Checking out the MakerBot Replicator (5th Generation)
Recently we got a chance to look over the new MakerBot Replicator, and it’s a pretty slick machine.
The printer as a whole looks rather similar to the Replicator 2 and 2X. Sleek, matte black frame, with the MakerBot logo on the back of the Z Stage. Once you get a closer look, however, the newest generation is vastly different.
The menu and interface have both had a complete overhaul — The overly sensitive arrow keys have been replaced with a rotary click wheel that’s got a really nice feel to it. The LCD display is much prettier and responsive, and looks pretty good even in bright light.
The spool of filament is now held internally. The holder slides vertically out of the printer, your spool is loaded, the holder is clicked into place, and off you go. A minor upgrade to the form factor.
As for the bot’s linear motion, there’s a definite upgrade there. The bot’s X and Y now rides on linear rails with recirculating ball bearings. In addition, the motor configuration has been changed to that of an H-Bot. This means that all motors are completely stationary, greatly reducing your moving mass. We were told that we’d see speed increases of 300% compared to current printers, but that’s something that we’ll have to test for ourselves later on…
Finally, the really big upgrade: The smart extruder. We didn’t get a chance to see it being “smart”, but it certainly seemed to work! For people with multiple bots, this is a godsend in terms of maintenance. The extruder’s held on to the X-Carriage with magnets, and replacing it involves pulling it off, and popping a new one on. Anyone who has replaced the Bar Mount Assembly on the Replicator 2 or 2X knows how laborious it is, so this thing is awesome!
The hot end has gotten a redesign, as we can see a big heatsink near the bottom there. Better cooling of the hot end and more control of the thermal gradient could be MakerBot’s key to getting that “300% increase”, but only time will tell for sure.
Last on our list of features (That we saw) is the new bed leveling. The Smart Extruder has a Hall-Effect Sensor in it, allowing it to “know” where it is in relation to the bed. The printer actually tells you when it’s level!
We’re still waiting for our bots to arrive, but once they do, you can be sure we’ll be tearing them down to see what makes them tick. The electronics have been completely re-designed, and this printer is way smarter than the old models.
These printers haven’t changed much in terms of the way they work: In the end, we’re still just laying down layers of plastic goop. The Replicator (5th Gen) simply streamlines the process, and makes it easier than ever for average consumer to use.

Teardown of the Makerbot 5th Gen Replicator Smart Extruder
In our previous blog post, we just had a quick overview of the new Replicator and its features. Well, we finally got a 5th Gen Replicator in the office. And that means that we finally got to get into the nitty gritty of the bot.

There are a ton of features packed into this extruder! We'll tackle them all, but the ones to note are:
· The four circular bosses on the edges: These contain the magnets to hold the extruder in place.
· The fan duct on the bottom: This helps cool the filament as it comes out of the nozzle
· The nozzle/heat block/heatsink: The basis of any good extruder!
· The circular metal inset, left of the connection pins: This is our hobbed wheel. We'll see this in more detail later.
We've been told that filament won't get jammed in this extruder and, while we are hopeful, we are also realistic. We're happy that MakerBot included access to the idler bearing tension arm. This allows the user to release pressure on the filament, and pull it out.
That's about all we can do from the outside… so let's tear this thing apart!
Like many of MakerBot's injection molded parts, this thing is held together with snap-fit clips. You need to remove both the cooling fan duct and the filament guide before you can split the extruder down its middle.
Some gentle nudging with a flat head screwdriver, and we had popped off the fan duct!
One thing that did surprise us, however, was how wobbly the assembly seemed to be! The nozzle and heater block could move up and down by nearly 5mm!

Weird… The only way to find answers was to dig deeper!
It's worth taking a break here to discuss the cylindrical tube on the right. According to a source from MakerBot, that was supposed to be the original path for the filament. They found that the sharp turn required inside the extruder would often snap the filament. We don't suggest putting anything through there!
We're going to take another break here to discuss a major feature of the hot end. When doing fast travels, the nozzle (and the rest of the hot end assembly) jump up. This reduces stringing between towers, and also lessens the chance of knocking over a tall print.
Remember earlier when we said our assembly was "wobbly"? Turns out, that's a feature, not a bug!
So how does this work? Some people have been speculating that it's a solenoid action, but it's even simpler than that (At least, on the Smart Extruder side).
**We've had some great insights down in the comments: There's speculation that this magnet is used with a Hall Effect sensor to determine the Z-Position of the nozzle.**
We haven't figured out how to safely open up our X-Carriage yet, but we hope to do so soon!
Anyways, on with the show.
So it appears that the Smart Extruder is actually… well, smart! And MakerBot seems to have covered the two main modes of failure due to filament:
· A microswitch ensures that filament is being fed into the extruder. No more running out mid print!
· An optical rotary encoder ensures that your filament is actually feeding. If the bot thinks that it's pushing plastic, but the wheel isn't spinning, then the filament has gotten stuck for some reason.
We haven't had a chance to really stress test the smarts on our extruder, but it looks promising!
And that's it! Reassembly was relatively simple, except for aligning the hot end. It took a few tries of disassembling and reassembling before the hot end assembly would reliably perform its retraction.
Overall, it is clear that MakerBot is moving farther and farther away from the "tinkering" mindset, and more towards the "Plug-and-Play" mindset. They started with Cupcake and Thing-O-Matic kits, moved to pre-assembled wooden Replicators, then to the steel (but still hack-able) Replicator 2s, and have ended up with the 5th Gen Replicator — A machine that is meant to work largely as a black box (In addition to being, quite literally, a black box).
This is both good and bad — inexperienced users will be able to fix their machine with a very simple swap outs, but users that are comfortable with implementing their own fixes are now challenged even more. We really hope to see improvements to the Smart Extruder on Thingiverse, like we did with the original Replicator's extruder block, but we're guessing that the number of people who actually implement those hacks will be few and far between.

Search Tricks
These search tricks can save you time when researching online for your next project or just to find out what time it is across the world, so start using these right away.
- Convert units. Whether you want to convert currency, American and metric units, or any other unit, try typing in the known unit and the unknown unit to find your answer (like “how many teaspoons in a tablespoon” or “10 US dollars in Euros”).
- Do a timeline search. Use “view:timeline” followed by whatever you are researching to get a timeline for that topic.
- Get around blocked sites. If you are having problems getting around a blocked site, just type “cache:website address” with website address being the address of the blocked site to use Google’s cached copy to get where you are going.
- Use a tilde. Using a tilde (~) with a search term will bring you results with related search terms.
- Use the image search. Type in your search word, then select Images to use the image search when trying to put a picture to your term.
- Get a definition. If you want a definition without having to track down an online (or a physical) dictionary, just type “definition:word” to find the definition of the word in your results (i.e.: “definition: serendipity” will track down the definition of the word “serendipity”).
- Search within a specific website. If you know you want to look up Babe Ruth in Wikipedia, type in “site:wikipedia.org Babe Ruth” to go directly to the Wikipedia page about Babe Ruth. It works for any site, not just Wikipedia.
- Search within a specific kind of site. If you know you only want results from an educational site, try “site:edu” or for a government site, try “site:gov” and your search term to get results only from sites with those web addresses.
- Search for a specific file type. If you know you want a PDF (or maybe an MP3), just type in “filetype:pdf” and your search term to find results that are only in that file type.
- Calculate with Google. Type in any normal mathematical expressions to get the answer immediately. For example, “2*4″ will get you the answer “8.”
- Time. Enter “what time is it” and any location to find out the local time.
- Find a term in a URL. This handy trick is especially useful when searching blogs, where dates are frequently used in the URL. If you want to know about a topic for that year only and not any other year, type “inurl:2009″ and your keyword to find results with your keyword in URLs with 2009 in them.
- Use Show Options to refine your search. Click “Show Options” on your search result page to have access to tools that will help you filter and refine your results.
- Search for a face. If you are looking for a person and not just their name, type “&imgtype=face” after the search results to narrow your results to those with images of faces.

- Google Scholar. Use this specialized Google search to get results from scholarly literature such as peer-reviewed papers, theses, and academic publishers.

- Search full text. Google Books offers full text for over 10,000 books, so look here the next time you are researching something at the last minute.
- Use “About this book”. At the top left of the page of a book, clicking this link will give you helpful information such as the table of contents, related books, and a map of places mentioned in the book.
- Create a personalized library. Click on “Add to my shared library” to start your own personalized library where you can label books to keep them organized for each class or project.
